The highest IDV scores were found to apply to Anglo-Saxon based, mainly English speaking countries, such as the United States, Australia, Great Britain and Canada, closely followed by northern European countries like Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden.� Other countries were spread over a wide range, with France, Spain and Israel occupying middle ground on the index.� Lower individualism scores were recorded by Arab countries, Greece and the Philippines.� The IDV scores revealed that most wealthy countries had high individualism scores, while nearly all the poor countries were at the lower end of the scale.� It would be an error, however, to assume that IDV scores were invariably dependent on national wealth; Japan, for example, scored below India, while the high collectivist orientation found in Confucianist-based societies, such as Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Korea, was reflected in their IDV scores which were below those of Jamaica and Iran.� Hofstede (1991:57) accounts for Japan�s �half way� score by pointing to traditional Japanese society�s �father to son� lineal structure, which is� situated somewhere between the nuclear and extended family types.
